Design Checklist
Things to consider as you prepare to personalize your home:
- Needs of your household, such as work, hobbies, school, entertainment.
- Start developing a wish list for your home. Check out Pinterest and/or Instagram, browse the latest home decorating magazines, and watch some of your favorite Home Decorating shows for inspiration.
Design Checklist
- Mark your calendar – Set your design appointment as soon as possible to allow time for questions and discussion before your options cut-off date.
- Arrange for a babysitter – Your design appointments can last several hours, and little ones are rarely that patient.
- Create your wish list – Take photos of the models, cut out pictures from magazines and catalogs of the look and finishes you prefer.
- Understand what’s standard – Be certain you understand the features that are included or optional in your new home.
- Take notes – Make notes of the options and upgrades that are shown in the model complex that you might want in your home.
- Consider your lifestyle – Think of how you’ll use each room. For instance, you may need more electrical outlets for your home office. Or, you might want a stain-resistant carpet if you have small children or pets. Consider furniture placement when locating cable jacks and outlets.
- Think ahead – Consider cabinetry finishes, appliances, paint colors, fixtures, or flooring selections for your kitchens and bathrooms. These elements set the style and tone of your new home.
- Bring cushions, swatches or photos of your key furniture pieces to the showroom to coordinate colors.
- Learn about the maintenance requirements and warranty commitments of the materials you are considering.
- Expect Variations – New homes are one of the last handcrafted products that consumers purchase today. They’re a combination of art, science, natural materials and personal craftsmanship, assembled by dozens of trade contractors. Because of this, expect your home to vary slightly from the model and other homes in the neighborhood.
